About DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME
The Star College Scheme was initiated by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in 2008 to support colleges and universities offering undergraduate education and improve science teaching across the country.
DBT has therefore launched a scheme for improving critical thinking and "hands-on" experimental work at the undergraduate (college) level in the basic science programmes. It is expected to encourage more students to take up higher education in science.
Through this scheme, the department identifies colleges with potential for excellence and provides support for developing infrastructure for academics and laboratory activities. This support is in turn expected to invigorate teaching and provide unique exposure for students to experimental science. Starting with a meagre 30 colleges in 2008, this pan-India scheme has supported science departments in more than 300 colleges all over the country till date.
Overall, it has been observed that the support received by colleges has resulted in a considerable decrease in student dropout rates in science subjects. The scheme also acts as a catalyst for igniting young minds (both faculty and students) to engage in networking, exposure visits to research institutes and industries, and apply for research grants in order to prepare them for future challenges after the successful completion of their undergraduate courses.
Objectives
-
To strengthen the academic and physical infrastructure for achieving excellence in teaching and training.
To enhance the quality of the learning and teaching process to stimulate original thinking through ‘hands–on’ exposure to experimental work and participation in summer schools.
To increase capabilities of core instrumentation resources by procuring new equipment and upgrading of existing facilities.
To promote networking and strengthen ties with neighbouring institutions and other laboratories.
To conduct specialized training programmes for faculty improvement for optimizing technical capabilities.
To increase capabilities of core instrumentation resources by procuring new equipment and upgrading existing facilities.
To provide access and exposure to students to research laboratories and industries in the country.
To help in devising standard curriculum and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) / kits for practicals.
To provide better library facility to students and teachers.
Key Highlights of the DBT STAR COLLEGE SCHEME
-
To strengthen the existing curriculum, practical courses are enriched by introducing new application-oriented practicals in the respective discipline.
To enhance the interdisciplinary skills that provide reservoirs of knowledge with maximum connectivity between the subjects.
To implementation of an interdisciplinary-based learning experience in order to understand the application of science and technology and to select various career options in different scientific fields..
To enhance faculty through virtual learning for efficient, effective, integrated interdisciplinary and applied aspects of respective subjects.
To improve the technical support of laboratory staff for active participation in solving problems in the related field and to improve laboratory conditions with the correct functioning of a management system in laboratories.
To impart advanced knowledge to the teachers of Government schools in rural areas in their discipline to manage academic and societal issues for the betterment of the region.
