Best Practice I
Nurturing Tomorrow’s Canopy: Embracing Tree Adoption for a Sustainable
Future
Objectives:
Foster eco-responsibility.
Reduce carbon footprint through tree adoption.
Provide hands-on learning with tree care.
Enhance campus aesthetics via diverse tree adoption.
Extend initiatives to local communities.
Context:
G.T.N. College’s tree adoption programme cultivates environmental responsibility, involving students in hands-on planting. This initiative extends beyond the campus, moulds environmental conscious leaders for community well-being.
Practice:
The tree adoption initiative involves both students and staff in the cultivation and care of campus trees. Each student assumes the responsibility of adopting a tree, thereby cultivating a deep familiarity with its nomenclature and practical applications. Furthermore, the NSS units consistently support tree adoption efforts, extending their impact beyond the campus boundaries.
Evidence of Success:
The success of the tree adoption initiative is evident in the thriving, monitored campus trees, increased biodiversity, and positive community feedback. The institution’s recognition with the Green Campus Award from the Tamil Nadu State Government further affirms its sustainable commitment to environmental stewardship.
Problems Encountered:
Limited student engagement persists as a challenge in the tree adoption program, affected by minimum contact hours. Resource constraints and unfavourable weather hinder tree plantation and care. Despite challenges, ongoing efforts aim to enhance resilience and effectiveness of the initiative.
